The Ransomed Crown The Saga of Roland Inness Book 4 eBook Wayne Grant
The fourth and final (?) book in the Roland Inness series, The Ransomed Crown, is in many ways the best in the series. And the series itself is great. The characters have continued to evolve and develop. Old characters are reunited to face new challenges. Newly introduced characters are individually drawn, unique and speak in their own voices. And there is action aplenty. I particularly enjoy the author's battle scenes. Bloody, exciting, front row action, full of surprises. And never boring. How many ways can you cleave an opponent's head? Countless... never boring or repetitive as so many battle scenes are in other books or movies. And the author's West Point and Army background shows through in the tactics employed. Though this is the billed as the last book of the series, I wouldn't be surprised to see future adventures with this group. Not everything is tied up in a neat little bow at the end of the series. Don't get me wrong; it is a satisfying ending, but there could be more adventures ahead. The door is open. Let's hope so. Though billed as youth books, people of all ages will enjoy the excellent writing, strong and well-developed characters and the ever twisting and turning plotline. Great dialogue, great description, great books. Read them. You'll be delighted you did.Tags : Amazon.com: The Ransomed Crown (The Saga of Roland Inness Book 4) eBook: Wayne Grant: Kindle Store, ebook,Wayne Grant,The Ransomed Crown (The Saga of Roland Inness Book 4),Fiction Historical,Fiction War & Military
The Ransomed Crown The Saga of Roland Inness Book 4 eBook Wayne Grant Reviews
I have enjoyed all the books in this well written series. A lot is packed into 3 years! This book was a satisfying end to the Roland Innes series, but it looks like he might appear again in another book by this author.
Roland and his friends have survived many adventures throughout England and the Holy Land, and now back in England they are beset by old enemies and helped by new friends.
I cannot recommend these books highly enough for young teens and above.
I just finished this series and was very happy with it. The story was good, with enough detail vs. action. The battle scenes were well described without boring me to tears by the time they were done. The characters were likable and flawed at the same time. The dialogue was good. And important to me, the writer managed to tell a great tale without feeling the need to succumb to frequent vulgarity...especially with word usages that were probably not even known it that time period. And there was great romance without it needing to sink into overdone sexual imagery; two things that made me put down Steven McKay after only a couple of chapters. I liked this series and am looking forward to more from Wayne Grant in the future.
The characters in this novel are both complex and interesting. While battles occur and there is a background story of evolving love between two characters there are no gory descriptions of violence or steamy sex scenes. This novel is the culmination of a story arc that built over the first two novels in the series and ties up the story line nicely while still leaving opportunities for the author to follow the characters in future stories. I'm looking forward to where Mr. Grant takes them next.
Having just completed THE RANSOMED CROWN I have now read all four books in this series. Taken together I have not seen as good a tale as this in years, especially for boys and girls who like to read and who would profit from a positive message about how best to lead one's life. In some ways this series, and particularly THE RANSOMED CROWN is a throwback to books written for teens and young adults from the mid-20th century. It's about time we had some more of them. But make no mistake about this book, it's a really good read and a great vehicle for transmitting a sense of history about the times in which it is set, and about our own. If I had children and grandchildren I'd be reading these to the younger ones and giving signed copies to the older ones, and then asking them to talk to me about them. Just two examples of the messages that they will gain When the protagonist Roland Inness was asked about the "Invalid Company" that improbably stood up for the king's cause despite their wounds and disrepute, he replied that they did so because they responded to his leadership. He had believed in them and "they repaid that belief many times over." And at the book's end, he expressed his love for Sir Roger, his Lord, because it was he "who showed him that a man must be judged by his actions, not by what tribe he was born into," If these two examples aren't enough to show a young boy or girl what they can and should do, I don't know what is. This is how the book ends, and the journey to get there is a great one.
What to say? Somehow the Saga of Roland Inness grabbed me and would not let go. This series is not the best written in form, it has many mistakes and many flaws, and yet, I love it.
I think I love it because the author loves it. I can feel his excitement, his heart, and his imagination shining through the story and the characters. Grant is a real person who loves Roland Inness, and by turn, made me love him.
Roland is not the most witty, charming, nor handsome hero to ever grace a series. But he is brave, sincere, straightforward, and smart. He never gives up. He felt like a more realistic version of medieval heroes and legends such as Robin Hood. Roland is a hero you come to believe might have actually lived.
I do wish Roland had been able to have more of the spotlight in this book. So many events and characters had to be brought to a conclusion in this story, still, I wish Roland had a bit more "screen time". Especially when it came to shared moments with Millicent. Call me and old romantic, but I deeply enjoyed their relationship.
I am waiting with bated breath in hopes of this story being continued. Grant has given hints that he is not entirely done with Roland Inness. That makes me very happy as I am not fully done with Roland Inness either. There is more of his story to be told and I cannot wait to hear it.
