The Conqueror Dell Historical Romance Brenda Joyce 9780440206095 Books

This book has so many problems yet it's supremely entertaining and one can't help appreciating its classic 1980s bodice ripper-ness. When we first meet the hero, he's about to rape the heroine after burning down her village. Later on, he does rape her...SPOILER ALERT...on her wedding night to another man. Oh, and he's married to someone else too...her sister! She is so hurt and angry that they follow up this act of aggression by making mad, passionate love for the rest of the night. (Let's hope no one's potential boyfriend reads this book for romance tips.) Later, these two have an affair that everyone knows about, including their spouses. Oh, and her husband is a good friend of the hero's. (Clearly, the hero needs to look up the definition of the word "friend" and they should both look up the definition of "fidelity".) Still, despite the raping/pillaging hero and the dumb heroine, the story is fast-paced and supremely entertaining. I read it in a day. Go figure.

The Conqueror Dell Historical Romance Brenda Joyce 9780440206095 Books Reviews

I had a hardback copy of this book, which I think I gave away. Recently, I wanted to read it again, so I bought the kindle edition. I thought the story was well-plotted, well-written and had interesting dialogue. Joyce has a way of embedding archaic terms that makes the time period believable. She doesn't write deeply, but she gives you enough details to fill in with your own imagination. The dance between the Ceidre and Rolfe was involving, evolving and fun to read (most of the time). Joyce was always good at showing how the characters cared about each other.

My chief complaint is the kindle edition. The transcription was TERRIBLE. There are at least 20 typos and lack of paragraphs that made the dialogue confusing to follow. Luckily, since I had read the print version before, I always knew which characters were speaking. Still, this kindle edition is such a poor product that it makes me wary of buying more kindle books like it (i.e. old romance novels newly transcribed). I think the publishers should give us back some kind of refund for delivering such a poor product. It really does detract from the joy of reading when you encounter so many mistakes. Shame on the publishers! Do yourself a favor and buy the print version.
What a great job the author did in creating unforgettable characters in Ceidre and Rolfe! They were a lot alike in their loyalty for country and in their passion. It was fast paced and a roller coaster of emotion as the H/h fall in love. Rolfe is handsome, arrogant and protective of the weak, the epitome of a seasoned warrior, who fights passionately and loves passionately. Ceidre, a passionate healer, evolves from hating the Norman into falling in love with him, but is it too late? Read this page turner to find out! I read it twice and enjoyed each time!
this is good book, tight, engrosing and believable according to the times, it may be a little difficult to get around a few events, but we must keep in mind the times and well keep from looking at it with modern eyes if u will the setting of the book aside its froma the early 90s books have angst in droves, they made u cringe and made ulaugh in equal measure, not very PC but ineteresting P there are times where u want to beat Rolphe, he mistreated Ceidre a few times out of mistrust and other "man" issues P and then of course have come back repentant, but to much on his guard to come righ out and express his emotions, but even so u cant help but feel the intensity between them, how much they both care, he cant be apart from her and it shows. ceidre also has her "i want to shake her" moments and at the same time u admire her loyalty, and she is a strong character, a few flaws non withstanding.
The things she does have a reason. Logic may say that she could have just surrender to fate sooner but hey, the ride wouldnt have been half a interesting.

its a strong story, very intense, ull want to keep reading.
u'll love or not, thats up to u, but its memorable. I liked it, it was worth the read, i liked Ceidre and Rolphe is a good strong alpha, his flaws come as product of his times. and he was well matched it was entertaining, funny, sad and at times weird & vagely disturbing (alice)... read it, u could be another lover P
This is book 1 of the two medieval stories in the de Warenne Dynasty series (The Promise of the Rose is the second)

It's 1069 and William I has conquered England and is handing out land to his knights while still fighting the Danes and the Saxon rebels. Rolfe the Relentless claims Castle Aelfgar and weds the Lady Alice, a bitter woman who comes with the land, but the woman he wants is her illegitimate sister, Ceidre, who he would rather have married.

Ceidre is a fiery lass, a healer and a loyal Saxon who, in league with her brothers Edwin and Morcar, risks all to restore Aelfgar to her family. She seeks to thwart Rolf at every turn, while being wildly attracted to the Norman. He treats her very badly most of the time but he's still obsessed with her. Having caught her in treason and flogged her till she bled (the usual punishment for a woman), he decides to get rid of her by marrying her to one of his knights. But then he finds he cannot give her up entirely and decides he will first have his pleasure....

Joyce serves up a suspenseful tale full of history and with wonderful characters. I loved the heroine for her courage and her defiance of the Norman overlord. To be Saxon in those days of William the Conqueror was to know hardship and humiliation. Ceidre tried to do her part to fight against it even at the cost of her personal integrity. Rolfe was a strong leader who was clearly a favored knight of the king, yet he risked much to protect the Saxon maid he wanted.

This is a well-researched, well-written story with lots of grist. Though Ceidre and Rolfe are fictional, her two brothers, Edwin and Morcar were real historic figures who rebelled against Norman rule till their deaths.

I recommend it and the second one.
