It Kind of a Funny Story eBook Ned Vizzini

It’s Kind of a Funny Story, by Ned Vizzini is definitely a good read, and I recommend it to people who are in for different plot settings, and a bunch of different characters. You get to really see what the main character, Craig, is feeling, and how he expresses himself throughout the whole book. It’s like you get to really know you Craig is, and get to become a good friend of his. This book isn't one that’s very distant from the character, it’s upfront and personal. That’s why I like it so much. Also, you may get to relate to him at some points in the story. I know I was.
One person on amazon wrote “Craig's story of setting ambitious goals and expecting to find happiness and satisfaction when he achieves them is easily relatable. That behavior is certainly not limited to teenagers, or to those that become clinically depressed.” I agree with this person. People set goals all the time that they want to achieve. Whether it’s to lose weight, to make new friends, or to get better grades, people set goals for themselves. For Craig, it’s to find the Shift. Craig is depressed right now, and he wants himself to get better. One step he takes to make himself happy again is hanging out with his friend Aaron. They would hang out every day, just watching movies, playing video games, or even just talking or taking a walk. Instead of staying cooped up inside of his house, he went out with a friend. Another way that he started to make himself happy again was when he brought himself to the hospital when he knew he was going to commit suicide. That was a huge step for him to take, since this was when he was at his worst state. He called the suicide hotline, and they suggested him to go to the hospital. So that’s what he did. He didn't even tell his parents, he just walked over himself. Craig also started to find happiness again when he was in an art class in the hospital, drawing maps, just like he did when he was a little kid. This brought back memories of when he was good and happy, so this definitely helped him gain confidence to fixing himself.
My favorite character in this book was Craig’s younger sister, Sarah. She was always there for Craig, and she always supported him in everything that he did. She cares for him very much. When he went to the hospital, she visited often to check up on him, and make sure that he was doing alright. Even when he was at home she wanted to make sure that he was taking care of himself, and that he was happy. Having someone who cares for you so much is a very important thing to have in life. Not everyone has someone that cares for them. So, Sarah is very important to Craig, and she looks up to him. She wants to express her love towards him as much as possible.
One of my favorite quotes in this book is “‘Everybody has problems. Some people just hid their crap better than others. But people aren’t going to look at you and run away. They’re going to look at you and think that they can talk to you, and that you’ll understand, and that you’re brave, and that you’re strong. And you are.’” (Vizzini 366-367). This is a really powerful quote, and it’s one that I can relate to. I am usually a very self conscious person, and so hearing this is very meaningful. Also, I have some things I’m dealing with too. Although Craig is saying this to a totally different person who has totally different problems, it’s still very strong, and I bet that a lot of other people can relate to this too.

It Kind of a Funny Story eBook Ned Vizzini Reviews

When I began reading It's Kind of a Funny Story for a book group, I had heard the literature was similar to the book, Perks of Being a Wallflower. I was worried at first that it would be another generic story of a group of outsider teens that would become friends and finally comfortable with themselves. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading. Ned Vizzini writes eloquent and tasteful book on frustration relevant to all teens, even if their frustration is not to the extent of depression that Craig possesses.
Craig Gilner, a New York City teen, strives to be accepted into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School. He believes that this will be a ticket to a successful future full of contentment. After working extremely hard to get in, Craig discovers that achieving success in this school will be much harder than he planned. The stress leads to a severe case of depression to the extent he wants to kill himself. From there, he checks himself into an adult psychiatric facility and meets some unlikely friends. The rest is history.
Foremost, Vizzini does a fantastic job of relating Craig to current day teens. Many teens feel the pressure to succeed in school for a successful life. The stress level from competition is higher than ever and the lessons Craig learns in the ward helps teen with coping strategies. Furthermore, the style Vizzini wrote Craig's vocabulary mirrors the way teens speak, making him relatable. For example, one line Craig stated was, "I'm done with those; regrets are an excuse for people who have failed," in chapter forty-one. That line especially struck a chord and made me think every event happens for a reason and if we make mistakes doesn't ignore them, learn from them.
Yet, the reason I gave this book four stars is due to the fact the middle of the book drags on at parts. I feel like the details are not there and the chronological order is stated as "First this happened and then this and next this" and so on and so forth. Plus *spoiler alert*, Noelle seems as too perfect of a character. I wish she had another character flaw other than just being depressed such as leaving the hospital and her parents not accepting Craig due to the fact they met in a ward.
Overall, the style of Vizzini's writing expresses the feeling of anxiety, stress, etc. that teens can relate to. The book is an easy read and I would recommend it to others.
